You sprayed. It came back. You sprayed again, changed product, sprayed earlier in the season, and it came back.
The spray was never the problem. Spores need a specific condition to germinate, and that condition is being supplied every clear night regardless of what you put on the leaves.
The variable that decides it
Leaf wetness duration. How many continuous hours a leaf surface stays wet.
Fungal spores landing on a dry leaf do nothing. Landing on a leaf that stays wet for a few hours, they germinate and get inside. The threshold varies by species and temperature but is commonly quoted around four to twelve hours.
That is the number to attack. Not the spore load — spores are everywhere and always will be.
Where the hours come from
Rain is the obvious source and the least important, because it is occasional.
Dew is the persistent one. Leaves are thin, thermally isolated and face the open sky, so they radiate heat efficiently and end up several degrees colder than the air. On any clear, still night they cross the dew point and collect water — and they hold it until the sun dries them.

That third row is the one worth staring at. Evening watering does not merely add moisture — it starts the clock hours before dew would have, converting a marginal night into a comfortable one for germination.
What actually shortens the window
In order of effect:
1. Water in the morning, not the evening. Foliage dries during the day and the overnight dew starts from dry. This one change is often worth more than an entire spray programme, and it costs nothing. It is the whole subject of watering at the wrong hour.
2. Improve airflow. Prune for an open structure, space plants properly, thin congested growth. Moving air dries leaves faster, and this attacks the variable directly.
3. Water at the roots, not over the leaves. Soaker hose or can at the base. Overhead watering wets every surface you were trying to keep dry.
4. Site for morning sun. A bed that gets early sun dries hours before one in shade. A north-facing corner may not dry at all in autumn.
5. Then spray, if still needed — as protection during high-risk periods rather than as the whole strategy.
Powdery mildew is the exception
Worth knowing, because it breaks the rule above.
Most fungal diseases need free water on the leaf. Powdery mildew does not — it prefers high humidity without wetness, and can be worst in dry-looking conditions with warm days and humid nights. Wet leaves actually inhibit it.
So if the problem is powdery mildew specifically, the levers shift towards airflow and humidity rather than leaf drying. Downy mildew, black spot, rusts and blights all follow the wet-hours rule.
Seeing the bad nights coming
A narrow dew point spread on a clear, still night means dew early and a long wet window. A wide spread, or cloud, or a breeze means a short one or none.
The forecast shows the two lines converging, which tells you which nights are the risky ones — and therefore when a protective spray is actually worth applying rather than applied on a schedule.
