Some mornings you walk out and it is fine. Others, within a hundred metres, your eyes are streaming and you are wondering whether to turn back.
Same route, same season, same time. What differs is what the night did to the air.
The inversion, and why nothing disperses
After sunset the ground radiates heat away and cools the air immediately above it. That leaves cold, dense air sitting underneath warmer air — a temperature inversion, which is stable and strongly suppresses vertical mixing.
Whatever is near the ground therefore stays near the ground. Pollen, spores, dust and exhaust all sit in a shallow layer at roughly head height, undiluted, until the sun warms the surface enough to break the inversion up.
That is why the same concentration of allergen can feel dramatically worse at seven than at eleven. It is not that there is more of it — it is that it is all in the layer you are breathing.
Which allergen you have decides the pattern
This is where general advice goes wrong, because pollen and mould respond to moisture in opposite directions.

So "humid mornings are worse" is true for some people and false for others, and both are reporting accurately.
If your bad mornings are the damp, still, dewy ones — the kind that soak the grass — mould is the more likely trigger. If they are the dry, breezy ones, pollen.
The dew connection
Dew forms on exactly the nights with an inversion: clear, calm, little mixing. So heavy dew is a marker of the conditions that trap allergens near the ground, quite apart from what it does to the allergens themselves.
Damp vegetation also favours the fungi that release spores at dawn, which is why a lawn that has been wet for eleven hours can be a source rather than a suppressant.
What is actually useful
- Notice which mornings are bad, and check whether they were damp and still or dry and breezy. That distinction tells you more about your trigger than any general advice.
- Wait for the mixing. Once the sun breaks the inversion, the shallow layer disperses through a much deeper one. Mid-morning onward is a genuinely different air.
- Check the dew point spread. A narrow spread means a dewy, still, inversion morning; a wide one means the air was never close to saturating and there was probably some movement.
