You were in position at half past four. The light comes up, the thing you have waited three weekends for finally walks out into the open, and every piece of glass you own has gone milky at the same moment.
The timing is not bad luck. Dawn is the coldest point of the night, and cold glass under an open sky is the specific condition for this.
Why dawn specifically
Two things peak at once.
Surface temperature is at its minimum. Everything has been radiating heat to the sky since sunset with nothing replacing it, so the coldest moment of the whole night is the last hour before the sun appears — not midnight.
Relative humidity is at its maximum, for the same reason. As the air cools towards the dew point the percentage climbs, so the margin between the glass and saturation is at its narrowest exactly when you need the optics.
Your objective lens is also pointing at the sky, which makes it an efficient radiator in its own right — it can sit a few degrees below the surrounding air, like a car roof.
External versus internal
Worth distinguishing, because the responses are completely different.
External fogging is condensation on the outer surfaces. Annoying, harmless, and clears when the glass warms past the dew point. This is what almost everyone experiences.
Internal fogging is moisture that has got inside the body and condensed between elements. That means a failed seal. Modern binoculars and scopes are purged with dry nitrogen or argon specifically so there is no internal moisture to condense — if yours are fogging inside, the purge gas has escaped and the instrument needs servicing.
A useful diagnostic: external fog wipes off. Internal fog does not.
What actually helps
Keep the glass warm. Under a jacket, against your body, between uses. This is the only measure that pulls the real lever — raising the surface above the dew point.
Leave the caps off. Trapped air in front of a cold element slows equalisation and holds moisture. Airflow helps.
Do not stack cold on cold. Gear stored overnight in a car boot is starting from behind. Bringing it into the house the night before and carrying it out warm buys you the first crucial hour.
Anti-fog treatments spread condensation into a transparent film rather than preventing it. Genuinely useful in marginal conditions, and not a substitute for temperature.
Give up on wiping. The glass is still below the dew point, so it re-fogs within seconds, and you are dragging a cloth across a wet coated surface that may have picked up grit.
Reading the night before
The dew point spread tells you what kind of dawn you are getting:
- Wide spread — glass has margin. Little or no fogging.
- Under 5°F — heavy dew on everything, including your optics. Plan for it.
- Near zero — fog, and the visibility problem is bigger than your lenses.
The forecast shows both lines through the small hours, which is worth thirty seconds the evening before a dawn start.
Drones and altitude
One extra wrinkle: air generally cools with height, so a camera that is comfortably above the dew point at ground level can drop below it on the way up.
Warm gear before launch, and expect the first flight of a still, humid morning to be the worst one.
