They came out of the humidor in perfect condition. Two days later, at the other end, they are lighter, harder and the wrappers have gone brittle at the foot.
Nothing was mishandled. They simply spent two days in air that had a completely different amount of water in it, and tobacco does what everything organic does — it equalises.
Equilibrium moisture content
Tobacco is hygroscopic. It absorbs water from the air when the air is damp and releases it when the air is dry, until its own moisture content is in equilibrium with the surrounding relative humidity.
A humidor holds around 70%, so the cigars settle at the moisture content that corresponds to it. Put them into 25% air and they will settle at the moisture content that corresponds to that — and the journey between the two states is the damage.
Speed depends on the gradient and on how much air is moving past. In a sealed case, the small volume of trapped air equalises with the cigars and then stops, which is most of the protection a travel case provides. Loose in a pocket or a bag, air is exchanged continuously and drying does not stop.
Why the destination matters more than the temperature
This is where the percentage misleads badly.
Two places can report the same relative humidity and hold completely different amounts of water, because capacity depends on temperature. And a cigar moving between them is responding to the percentage at the temperature it actually sits in.

The third row is the one that catches people. That winter air read 80% outside and felt damp — but warming it does not add water, so inside the heated car it is 20% air and it will pull moisture out of anything organic within hours.
An aircraft cabin is the same story with the air drawn from altitude, where there is essentially no water at all.
What to do
- Seal them. A well-sealed travel case is most of the answer, because the trapped air equalises and then stops taking.
- Add a humidity pack for anything beyond a few days, or for a destination you know is dry.
- Keep them out of heated spaces. A car with the heating on is one of the driest environments they will meet.
- Do not rush the recovery. Rehydrating a dried cigar quickly makes the wrapper expand faster than the filler and split it. Weeks, gradually.
The honest limit of this site
Cigar storage is an indoor, enclosed-volume problem. It needs a calibrated hygrometer in the box, and the salt test is worth running on it, because consumer hygrometers are frequently several percent out.
What an outdoor reading genuinely gives you is the water content of the air you are travelling through — which is the figure that explains why a mild damp winter day turns into desert air the moment it is heated. That is a real and useful thing to understand, and it is not the same as knowing what your humidor is doing.
