The forecast says 82°F and sunny, which sounds ideal, and it tells you almost nothing about what a hundred people in a marquee will be experiencing at nine in the evening.

Two evenings with an identical high can be completely different events. What separates them is a figure sitting in the same forecast, and it has the useful property of barely changing all day.

The high is the wrong number

By nine at night the afternoon high is history. The temperature has fallen — but how far, and how it feels when it gets there, is set by the dew point.

The floor under the evening

The mechanism worth understanding is that air cannot cool much below its own dew point.

As the temperature drops to meet it, water starts condensing, and condensing releases latent heat almost as fast as the ground is losing it. Cooling stalls.

So the dew point is a floor. A 70°F dew point means the evening will not go far below 70°F, however clear the sky and however long you wait. It is the same reason humid nights stay warm and why "it will cool down later" is so often wrong on exactly the evenings you most want it to be right.

The scale to plan against

  • Under 55°F — genuinely pleasant. People will want layers by ten.
  • 55–60°F — comfortable. Nobody will comment on the air.
  • 60–65°F — noticeably close. Guests will look for shade and moving air.
  • 65–70°F — muggy. Dancing becomes hard work.
  • Over 70°F — oppressive, and it will not improve after dark.

Why you can check it early

Dew point is well forecast two to three days out, and often further, because it follows air masses and air masses move predictably.

Relative humidity is much less useful at range, since it inherits the uncertainty in the temperature forecast on top of the moisture forecast. So for planning purposes the dew point is both the more meaningful figure and the more reliable one.

What actually helps on a muggy evening

Moving air, above everything. Fans, open marquee sides, cross-ventilation. Evaporation from skin is the body's remaining cooling route in humid conditions, and airflow is what keeps it working.

Shade earlier in the day, so guests do not arrive at the evening already heat-loaded.

Cold drinks and water, which matters more than usual because sweat loss is high and evaporative return is low.

Do not count on the temperature dropping. The dew point told you it would not.
